Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
I am hopeful that this Newsletter, the first from your new Board, reaches you via e-mail before the Christmas holiday.
It brings with it our best wishes to all our Members for a joyous Holiday Season and for a prosperous New Year!
I feel honored to have been elected as your Commodore for the 2010 sailing season and I believe we have assembled an extraordinarily capable and experienced Board to guide our Club through all the business, social and other events we look forward to next year.
As you well know, the health of any Club is totally dependent on the energy invested by its membership and your current Board members, most of whom have served as officers of the Club in prior years, have volunteered their time and experience to serve on the Board of the Club for the upcoming year. On behalf of the membership, they bring to the table a commitment to take a fresh approach to organizing and running our racing and cruising events, to maintaining the financial health of the Club, to renewing efforts to promote the Club locally through advertising and sponsorship programs, to involving the Club more closely in local issues that impact the Lake and our activities, to continue the Club’s marketing and merchandising efforts with appealing and affordable items and to implement some new and exciting events together with a program of classes designed to assist members in becoming more confident, proficient and safe sailors. These objectives generally conform to the Purposes of the Club as stated in its Bylaws:
- To encourage boating and yachting
- To promote character development and respect for the sea
- To promote and encourage the training of youth in the heritage of yachting
- To cultivate social interaction among its members
It is my hope as Commodore to harness the energies of the Board members and other volunteers to promote the Club and its activities for the benefit of existing and future members and provide a framework for fun, social, competitive and educational programs that appeal to our local sailing community.
The current economic climate has undoubtedly touched all of us to varying degrees over the last year and is likely to continue to do so through 2010. I have been pleasantly surprised by the level of participation in the Club’s activities over this period which, with a few understandable exceptions, has been close to the level in prior years. The new Board has inherited a healthy financial position and we intend to build on this platform over the next year.
On a personal note, it is my hope to re-acquaint myself with our members, new and old, to promote the Club both as a voice to be heard on issues which impact our enjoyment of beautiful Lake Pend Oreille as well as a forum for all who enjoy the feel of wind in a sail to get together to compete, socialize, exchange tall stories and have fun and to provide a welcoming and educational environment for newcomers to add to our numbers. It is also my job to lead and direct the Board – I feel lucky and privileged that this is the easy part; later in this Newsletter, the members of the 2010 Board are introduced to you and the brief bios on each barely convey the wealth of experience and years of service which have been collectively and unselfishly volunteered to perform the various duties required on your behalf.
In all, as I compose this message on a cold, foggy, rainy December morning with nothing but depressing news on the radio (Tiger Woods, the Copenhagen climate talks, swine flu), I have to remind myself that we are all sailors in high latitudes where winter can only be survived by looking forward to Spring, judicious daydreaming of Caribbean cruises, obsessive study of yachting magazines and sending off for Brokers’ brochures on really expensive yachts for sale in exotic locations.
I do look forward to Spring 2010 with excitement – your Board has now had 2 meetings and we are well prepared for the forthcoming year. We have provisional schedules for our 2010 Racing and Cruising programs, new merchandise is in the works, plans are in place for a couple of new events in the Summer and the Newsletter contains announcements of upcoming events and news. 2010 is also Bayview’s Centennial Year and LPOYC will be participating in the celebration of this milestone with a unique “Sail-athon” event in July.
If you have not yet renewed your membership, please do so – if you have, thank you!
In either case, we need to update our membership records, especially e-mail addresses, so please complete and return the membership form contained in this Newsletter with the relevant changes. If you know of anyone who would like to be a member, advertiser, sponsor or who is not receiving this Newsletter at an updated e-mail address, let us know.
I hope to see you at our next event, The Frostbite Race & Chili Feed at the Bitter End on Saturday, January 2nd 2010 and please mark your calendars for the Ordinary General Meeting of the Club to be held on Saturday, March 20th 2010 at a time and place to be announced.
In the meantime, I wish you all a wonderful Holiday Season, stay warm, keep dreaming and I look forward to seeing you all in the New Year!
Sincerely,
Tim Redfern

RACING HANDICAPS
This season, we will dispense with a local handicapper and become governed by PHRF-NW (Seattle) for the purpose of establishing racing handicaps. Each racer will be required to obtain a PHRF-NW Certificate for his boat and detailed information will be made available shortly. Application forms are available from the PHRF-NW website (www.phrf-nw.org).
SCENIC BAY NO WAKE ZONE
There has been no final decision regarding this issue and a further meeting is scheduled for January 13th, 2010. The Club has volunteered to provide labor & materials to re-anchor the 2 missing buoys (in their original positions) and we await the outcome of the next meeting and the decision of the Kootenai County Commissioners before knowing how to proceed.
BONNER COUNTY SHERIFF’S MARINE DIVISION
Bonner County has applied for a grant for an additional patrol boat in order to provide acceptable emergency response and law enforcement for the southern part of Lake Pend Oreille. In the absence of any meaningful presence by Kootenai County, your Board decided to agree to the request by Bonner County to write a letter of support of its application and we will keep you posted on any developments on this front.
LPOYC CLASSES
We are formulating a series of classes beginning in early Spring. Some of the topics under consideration are rig tuning, sail trim, racing rules, starting procedures & tactics, seamanship (docking, anchoring), knot tying, high seas adventures. We are looking for input from our members on additional topics you might be interested in adding to the schedule, if you are willing to participate as a panel member and if you plan to attend any of these classes – stay tuned for more news.
SANDPOINT SAILING ASSOCIATION CLASSES
SSA are putting on some classes starting in February in conjunction with the City of Sandpoint. These are open to the public and details are available on the SSA website ( http://web.sandpointsailing.com/programs/seminar.html).
ADVERTISING AND SPONSORSHIP
Our Vice Commodore, Kim Mattern, will be contacting the membership shortly to elicit interest in advertising on the Club’s website and annual membership book and/or to become a race sponsor. If you or someone you know is interested, please contact Kim.
CLUB MERCHANDISE
We are very fortunate to have a professional, Caryl Herron, as Chair of our Marketing Committee. A new, exciting and affordable line of apparel and other items adorned with a new Club logo is being put together and we are hoping to be able to introduce these to our members at the OGM on March 20th.
Membership dues
Please remember to renew your membership. An application can be found at www.lpoyc.org.
